The first time I went to Watt's Grocery I was fairly new to Durham and had heard great things about this place so we came for their brunch. I must admit I was disappointed. The items out on the menu sounded much more appetizing than they actually ended up being. Still believe there are better places to come for brunch.

However I've eaten dinner here a few times and I have had some strong dinners. First it must be said their mac-and-cheese is to die for, so damn delicious. It is a starter but it comes in a very hefty portion, definitely either something to be shared to just have have for your main course if you want to indulge. The salad starters I've had here have all been delicious as well.

For dinner I've had a fish dish, the steak, and a pork course and Watt's hasn't let me down in food or in service. They haven't blown me away like some of the the best dinners I've had in Durham, but they were delicious solid offerings that I enjoyed.

Watt's is a Durham institution, it might not be as buzzed about as some of the newer restaurants on the Durham scene, but it is good place and that knows how to prepare a nice southern Americana dinner.

Overall the food was good, though it was a little spicy for some of the members of my party. My biggest negative was the fact that I brought cupcakes in for my dad's birthday and they were going to charge us a $1.50 plating fee per cupcake. I can understand if they actually offered dessert on their brunch menu, but they don't, so this didn't set well with me.

They got points for being available for a party for 10 at 11am on a Sunday, but maybe that also says a lot about the restaurant itself.

We tailgated in the parking lot and ate the cupcakes out of the back of my sister's minivan. Thanks Watts.

Took visiting and local family to dinner Dec. 29, 2016 expecting the usual good meal. What a disappointment. The steaks were good but all the other entrees were so/so and my "shrimp and oyster gumbo" a substitute by the kitchen for the NC fish stew was awful. Hope this was just a momentary lapse and not a downward slide for a restaurant that we have been happy to patronize in the pst.
